Colombia solidarity

Issue No. 1778

Protests are planned this weekend and on Monday in solidarity with the fight against Plan Colombia, the US-backed war in the South American country aimed at smashing resistance to neo-liberal economic policies.

Last Friday Aury Sara Marrugo, a leading figure in the Colombian United Oil Workers union, was kidnapped by paramilitaries in the city of Cartagena. Trade unionists and human rights activists fear for his life and are calling for protests to the Colombian government.

Send urgent protests to Andres Pastrana Arango, Presidente de la Republica de Colombia. Fax 00 571 286 7434, email [email protected] Copies to oil workers' union at [email protected]

Join protests, Saturday 8 December: Belfast, 12 noon, City Hall; Brighton, 12 noon-2pm Bond Street. Monday 10 December: Bristol, 6.30-7.30pm, opposite Hippodrome; Cardiff, 5-6pm, Nye Bevan statue, Queen Street; Norwich, 7pm, The Square, University of East Anglia; London, 6-8pm, Downing Street.
