Around 700 workers at the Pirelli tyre factory in Carlisle are set to strike on Friday and Saturday of this week against management’s plans to outsource five jobs to workers outside the factory.
Workers, in the T&G section of the new Unite union, are also set to strike on Friday 17 August.
If a strike takes place it will be only the second one at the factory since it was set up in 1969.
The factory produces about 10,000 tyres a day. A strike could lose hundreds of thousands of pounds for its owner.
Alan McGuckin, the T&G regional industrial organiser, said, “Pirelli wants to outsource a process from within the factory, and we believe that this process is a core part of production.
“We do not wish to see our membership and jobs cut by stealth. We do not agree that they should be outsourcing this process.
“Outsourcing would ultimately detract from the quality that our members produce.”
