The dispute at Scotland’s Herald, Sunday Herald and Evening Times newspapers took a nasty turn last week when management suspended union rep Gordon Thomson.
He was taken into an office with Evening Times editor Donald Martin and another senior member of staff.
Gordon requested he be accompanied, as is his right, in front of the two managers. This was refused.
After he walked out of the editor’s office and phoned a full time union official he was informed that he would be suspended.
This may lead to further escalation of strike action.
This followed a second strike by journalists in the NUJ union on Wednesday of last week as part of an ongoing dispute over compulsory redundancies and budget cuts.
