Bosses at Goodyear in Wolverhampton want to slash 500 jobs in revenge for workers' refusal to accept pay cuts and longer hours. Management and union leaders recommended to workers that they accept an 11 percent pay cut and longer hours.
In return the company said there would be 'only' 280 redundancies. Despite intense pressure, the workers rejected the offer. TGWU members voted by 1,329 to 350 against the deal, and AEEU union members rejected it by 142 to 134. Roger Shutt, the TGWU's regional industrial organiser, said, 'This is one of the strongest no votes I have seen. The deal meant asking the workers to choose having the plague or cholera.'
Goodyear bosses now say over 500 jobs will go. One woman interviewed by the Wolverhampton Express & Star was absolutely right when she said, 'All Goodyear wants is the blood of the workers.'
