Refugees in 'hell'

Issue No. 1730

The trial of 12 Afghans charged in connection with a hijacked plane that flew into Britain last year was due to begin on Thursday. But New Labour should be put in the dock over its treatment of the remaining 88 Afghan passengers who have asked for asylum in Britain.

A News of the World reporter was so disgusted by the appalling conditions the refugees are living in that it was presented in the right wing paper as a 'grinding tragedy'. The Afghans are living alongside 600 other refugees in the Thorncliffe 'hotel'. The communal showers are all locked up and the toilet doors screwed shut. Afghan refugee Anakita gave birth to her son in this hellhole on New Year's Eve. 'They turn the heating off at night. It is very damp. Every time he breathes I pray he won't cough,' she said. Thorncliffe is owned by the millionaire Sanger family who get £100 a week from the council for every refugee living in these squalid conditions.
