Colombia protest

Issue No. 1730

A protest is planned outside the Colombian embassy in London on Friday 19 January over the Latin American country's government's support for the US Plan Colombia. The US is pouring huge military resources into the plan under the pretext of a 'war on drugs'. In reality the plan is a US attempt to impose its will on a country at the heart of a region where it fears social unrest is threatening its business and strategic interests.

The US is supplying equipment and personnel to Colombia to spray huge areas of land with herbicidal chemicals. The Washington Post newspaper reported this week that corn, pineapple and other crops are being destroyed by the spraying in Colombia. It also reported cases of people in the sprayed areas becoming sick.

Picket the Colombian embassy, Friday 19 January, 3-6pm, Hans Crescent, Knightsbridge, London.

Anti-capitalist activists climbed the old town hall in Birmingham on Saturday and hung a banner from the ledge advertising the Birmingham leg of the Globalise Resistance counter-conference tour in February. The stunt attracted a lot of attention, mostly from local youth and students, not to mention the police. Over 50 people left contact details expressing an interest in both coming to the conference and helping to build it.
