Anti-war school students in Edinburgh pledge to Shout It Out!

Issue No. 2065

Anti-war school students in Edinburgh are kicking off the new school term with plans for a day long event in the city centre on Saturday 8 September.

Patrick Orr, a member of Edinburgh School Students Against War, told Socialist Worker that they have called the event Shout it Out!

He said, “It will be a street fair with live music, workshops, theatre and film showings.

“It is a chance to reach out to people who are not involved in the Stop the War movement and talk to them about the issues and about getting involved.

“One of the main campaigns we are running is to stop military recruitment in schools. We will be using the event to raise awareness of this campaign.”

School students are also planning to use the day to collect names on the new British-wide petition to keep the military out of schools.

The campaign received a boost at the end of last term when the EIS Scottish teachers’ union voted at its conference to call for an end to military recruitment in schools.

Patrick said, “One of the brilliant things about Shout It Out! is that it has almost exclusively been organised by school students.

“But we have also had a lot of support from other Stop the War groups and peace organisations in Scotland.”

Shout It Out! takes place on East Market Street in Edinburgh on Saturday 8 September.
