Respect keeps up the pressure in Stonebridge by-election campaign

More than 30 Respect supporters were out canvassing in Stonebridge ward in Brent, north west London last Sunday for the council by-election taking place on Thursday of this week. By the end of the day the entire ward had been canvassed.

The election is hotly contested by Labour and the Lib Dems. Some people Respect canvassers spoke to were bemused by the amount of election material that was being pushed through their letterboxes.

A major issue in the area is privatisation – in housing and in the local schools. Canvassers met voters who openly said they were 'disillusioned with the whole political process'.

One man who has lived in the ward for 38 years was angry at how the mainstream parties all offer the same message, but don't care about ordinary people. He explained how he has had seen housing built and destroyed, while housing costs for people in Stonebridge are spiralling.

A woman pensioner said that she had met the Respect candidate, Sarah Cox, and was impressed with her. She spoke about how angry she was that people had been sent to die in Iraq and Afghanistan for no reason and at huge cost, while there was no money to improve things for people in Britain.

Many people were still unsure of who to vote for. It is still crucial for Respect to get people to the ward over the final four days of the campaign to make sure that all voters are aware that there is a real alternative.
