Solid strike against pay cuts at Sheffield hospital

by Jill Chanter
Issue No. 2068

“If they want to make pay cuts – they should start at the top!”

This was the response of strikers at the Northern General Hospital trust in Sheffield, who face a 20 percent pay cut following the withdrawal of longstanding bonus payments.

Workers from the bulk stores department, members of the Unison union, were on strike on Monday and Tuesday of this week. They plan to continue to strike on these days for the next three weeks.

The workers had already struck three times previously. An insulting offer by management to freeze the pay cut in return for five hours extra work a week has served only to increase the determination of the strikers, who are receiving fantastic solidarity from trade unionists across the region.

Future plans for the campaign include a march through the hospital grounds and a public meeting in Sheffield to build support for the strike.

Messages of support and donations should be sent to Unison office, Vickers Corridor, Northern General Hospital, Herries Road, Sheffield, S5 7AU.
