Rastafarians Malcolm Willidon and John Mills stand outside the Metro Community Centre, Notting Hill, London, which, as the sign says, is “occupied by the youths until the ILEA [Inner London Education Authority] meets for talks with us”.

This photograph, taken in August 1979, appears in Black Britain: A Photographic History, which has just been published by Saqi Books.

The book includes a commentary from Paul Gilroy and a foreword from Stuart Hall. Paul will be speaking about the project at Stratford Library in east London, Thursday 25 October at 7pm.
