Up to 300 people attended a public meeting in Woodford Green in north east London organised by the Save Whipps Cross Hospital campaign and Keep Our NHS Public last week.
The future of the hospital is in doubt due to an NHS London review of heath provision in the capital and a further review of hospital provision locally.
Academic Colin Leys, Norma Dudley of the Unite union and Alan Hakim, a consultant at Whipps, all addressed the meeting. Three local MPs spoke from the floor.
A representative of the local primary care trust attempted to reassure the meeting that the voices of local people would be listened to. But he was greeted with derision.
