AROUND 300 students demonstrated at the University of Kent's Canterbury campus on Monday. College management want to cut the portering service, which would threaten safety on campus. Students had already protested on Friday of last week. On Monday students marched around campus rallying support and then rallied outside a management meeting discussing the cuts. 'If they're not going to listen we're going to have to occupy,' said one student.

STUDENTS AT Middlesex University are fighting management plans to sack 50 lecturers and shut down both the Bounds Green campus school of engineering and the Enfield campus geography department. Students have produced a petition, and a general meeting was due to take place on Wednesday, with a picket of a university committee set for Thursday. 'We're going to fight for our right to study,' said one student.

AROUND 150 students joined an anti-fees protest on bonfire night last Friday at Sussex University in Brighton. The students burnt an effigy of Tony Blair as well as fees demands from the university. Similar protests took place at other universities last week.
