Student Respect national committee members Dominic Kavakeb and Jennifer Jones have been elected to two of the most important student union sabbatical positions in the country.
Election results at Essex and Goldsmiths students' unions were already impressive before the results of two union investigations were announced this week.
Essex University saw the highest turnout in the union's voting history, but after the original count Dominic was a handful of votes short of becoming president.
However, following an independent investigation into fraudulent voting, the right's candidate had nearly 200 votes deducted, leaving Dominic with a clear majority.
Now he will be next year's president, joining the other four sabbaticals – who were all elected from the left 'Viva Essex' slate.
At Goldsmiths Jennifer Jones was elected as the campaigns sabbatical. However a complaint was lodged about alleged electoral irregularities. This has now been dismissed.
Jennifer will now take up her position, joining what was already a left majority on the executive.
Both elections result in strong left led unions, which will be at the forefront of next year's battles for free education, against cuts, and in opposition to the government's neoliberal, imperialist agenda.
