Iraqi protest against wall

Issue No. 2072

Over 1,000 Iraqis demonstrated in Baghdad last Saturday against the US occupation and its plans to carve up the city by building walls between Sunni and Shia areas. They chanted “No to the wall, no to America.”

The protest took place in al-Washash, a predominantly Shia neighbourhood in the mostly Sunni western Baghdad. The US has erected concrete blocks nearby and locals say it plans to turn them into a high concrete wall.

“The occupiers are planning to build a wall around our area, but we see that as them putting the area under siege,” one demonstrator told the Reuters news agency.

The demonstration also condemned the sectarian violence that has ripped Iraqi society apart in recent years. “Today we are saying no to the occupiers, no to the wall and no to all these disgraceful actions,” said Abu Jalal al-Saraji, a local leader.

The US is erecting concrete walls in at least five areas of Baghdad as part of its “surge” security crackdown against resistance forces.
