This German film is a Second World War movie with a difference. It tells the tale of Solly Sorowitsch, a Jewish forger who is captured by the Nazis and sent to a concentration camp, where he is caught up in a scheme to create fake Allied banknotes.
In return for helping the Nazi plan to cause economic havoc by flooding the US and Britain with forged notes, Sorowitsch and his fellow forgers gain a “privileged” status within the concentration camp – including running water, beds and enough to eat.
The Counterfeiters is based on the memoirs of Adolf Burger, a Jewish Communist who tried to sabotage the counterfeiting project from within.
Unlike many films that trivialise or sentimentalise the Holocaust, director Stefan Ruzowitsky takes a grimly realistic approach, dramatising the moral complexities of the counterfeiters and their terrible situation.
