Tribunal awards back pay to Northern Ireland lecturers

Issue No. 2074

Twenty two college lecturers in Northern Ireland are receiving back pay after an industrial tribunal found that they had been underpaid for five years.

Around 70 others who have been wrongly paid will also receive payments.

The lecturers’ case was fought by the University and College Union (UCU). Jim McKeown, the UCU official for Northern Ireland, said, “The employers used taxpayers’ money to pay the legal fees which undoubtedly amount to several thousands of pounds to try to defend what was indefensible.”
