Refuse workers in Hampshire plan strike

Issue No. 2074

Refuse workers in Eastleigh in Hampshire are planning to go on strike next month over changes to their working arrangements.

The workers say they will down tools early next month unless managers withdraw plans to end their current “task and finish” system.

Unison union branch secretary and refuse collection driver Dave Smith said the workers had already agreed to measures to increase productivity and provide more than £150,000 of savings.

He added that weekly routes have been increased from 4,600 properties to 5,000, while one dustcart has been removed from the system.

Dave said, “Management have seen our reluctance to let people down and they have tried to take advantage of that, but they have pushed us too far. Our members feel so strongly over this issue they have voted overwhelmingly for strike action.”
