Journalists in the NUJ union are preparing for the Stand up for Journalism day of action in defence of quality and standards in the profession on Monday of next week.
Events are planned across Britain to highlight the attacks on journalism taking place in newspapers, magazines and TV. Both ITV and BBC bosses have recently announced job cuts.
The NUJ has pledged to oppose ITV’s cuts to regional news and is, along with the Bectu and Unite unions, in negotiation with the BBC over the corporation’s plans for 2,500 job cuts.
The main event of the Stand up for Journalism day is a lobby of the Society of Editors conference at the Radisson Hotel on Peter Street, Manchester.
People will gather outside the offices of the Manchester Evening News on Hardman Street at 12.30pm on 5 November. NUJ members at the Coventry Telegraph will stage a disruptive mandatory union meeting on the day as part of their dispute over staffing levels.
