Jail sentences for UAE workers

Issue No. 2076

Authorities in the United Arab Emirates (UAE) have jailed over 120 workers following a strike (Socialist Worker, 3 November) that brought construction on prestigious building projects in the oil rich state to a halt.

The prison sentences follow a strike in October by thousands of workers, drawn mainly from South Asia, over wages and conditions. Other workers have been deported.

Police attacked the strikers as they attempted to hold a march near the Jebel Ali port area in the capital Dubai. They responded by occupying one of the building sites and pelting police with stones.

The jailings follow recognition by the government that the growing militancy sweeping the state cannot be crushed by repression alone.

The ministry of labour has proposed a series of measures to improve standards of housing for the migrant workers and new laws to improve their pay.
