London mayor

Issue No. 1673

THE NATIONAL executive of the MSF union suspended three leading lay officers of the London Regional Council of the union last Saturday. MSF members in London have been excluded from voting for the Labour candidate for mayor of London. Instead of denouncing the Labour Party leadership for ignoring democracy, the union leadership is trying to place the blame on the left wing London MSF leadership.

Last week general secretary Roger Lyons sent a letter to all MSF members. He claimed that the reason members were excluded from the ballot was the late payment of membership fees to the London Labour Party. The MSF London Regional Council is responsible for sending in the affiliation fees. In fact the fees were paid last July. The Labour Party has cashed the cheque. One MSF branch has already sent a letter in complaining about the witch hunt. Others should do the same.

Ilford

AROUND 45 Labour Party members attended a 'Frank Dobson for Mayor' rally in Ilford, east London, last week. Dobson concentrated on crime, transport and unemployment. On all these issues he parroted Blair.

Dobson got a rough ride from the audience. One person asked Dobson whether he would tax the rich to improve London Underground. Dobson replied, 'No.'
