Prysmian Cables workers defend pensions

Issue No. 2077

A mass meeting of Wrexham workers facing the end of their final salary pension scheme pledged to fight the proposals last week.

Prysmian Cables said it wants to close the final salary scheme from August 2008 and change it to a less generous defined contribution scheme.

Unite union branch secretary Dave Griffiths said, “Workers don’t want to negotiate, they want to keep the existing pension scheme, and will do anything to defend it, up to industrial action.”

Unions will hold a meeting of the pensions consultative committee on 26 November when they hope to be able to speak to the pension scheme actuary about the size of the scheme’s deficit.
