Hastings civil service worker sacked over union activity

Issue No. 2079

Eddie Fleming, the branch chair of the PCS union Child Support Agency (CSA) Hastings branch, has been sacked on charges relating to his trade union activities.

Eddie is a well respected PCS representative who has been a leading activist in his branch for 12 years.

The decision to dismiss him was made by CSA management. This is despite the fact that the appeals process on linked counter charges of bullying and harassment against the same managers involved in the case had not been completed.

CSA management follow a policy of “disengagement” with the union – they refuse to discuss changes to conditions and organisation before implementation.

Frustrated by their failure to cow the branch, management have resorted to this latest action.

Eddie’s real crime is standing up to an oppressive management and representing members in their struggle to save jobs, services and conditions.
