Campaigners from the Czech Republic told the conference about the growing unease over the “new cold war” in central Europe.
Ivona Novomestská, representing the No Bases Campaign, and Jan Neoral from the Czech League of Mayors spoke of the growing campaign to stop the US building a missile defence “shield” in their country.
Ivona said that the “Czech government has become the object of ridicule among ordinary people”. Jan added, “Everyone knows these bases are not about defence, but a prelude to massive militarisation.
“Our government claims that these bases are another step in the fight for democracy, which begun in 1989. But how can imposing a military base against the will of the people be ‘democratic’?”
