Workers at BAA’s seven airports including Heathrow, Gatwick and Glasgow are balloting for strike action in opposition to the company’s plans to close the final average salary pension scheme to new starters.
The ballot finishes on 20 December after which, in the event of a yes vote, action could commence from 28 December onwards. Some 5,000 union members are being balloted, including security and fire – groups that are capable of shutting airports completely.
The decision to go straight into a strike ballot was triggered by the short lead time between the company’s announcement and the implementation date.
That and the very real anger at the company’s intransigence means that there is very likely to be a substantial yes vote.
