Abortion: campaigners gear up to defend the right to choose

by Sadie Robinson
Issue No. 2082

Pro-choice campaigners are preparing for a battle to defend abortion rights. Abortion rights have recently come under attack from two amendments put to the Human Fertilisation and Embryology Bill, currently in the House of Lords.

Ann Henderson is the Scottish representative on the Abortion Rights campaign executive, and assistant secretary of the Scottish Trade Union Council (STUC). She told Socialist Worker, 'The STUC women's committee has written to all the Scottish peers in the Lords making our support for abortion rights clear. We intend to do the same for Scottish MPs in the new year.

'Abortion has become an issue in the media in Scotland because of attempts to increase the power of the devolved Scottish parliament, which would give it the power to amend abortion law.

'Alex Salmond, leader of the Scottish National Party, has stated his personal view that the legal time limit for abortion should be 20 weeks, rather than the current limit of 24.

'Women's groups in Scotland are planning to lobby MPs' surgeries next year as amendments to abortion law are discussed in the House of Commons.

'The focus of our action has to remain on Westminster – this is where decisions on both abortion law and any increased power for the Scottish parliament will be made.'

Abortion Rights has organised a public meeting on 16 January at 7.30pm in committee room 10, House of Commons. Speakers include Emily Thornberry MP, Francis O'Grady from the TUC and Dr Wendy Savage. For details go to » www.abortionrights.org.uk
