Thirty five agency workers at Carlisle’s Pirelli factory were set go on an indefinite strike on Wednesday of this week over a 1 percent pay offer.
The GMB union’s Ged Caig said the agency workers felt they were being treated as “second class” workers, being paid £3 or £4 per hour less than Pirelli workers.
The agency workers – many of them migrants – are employed by Staffline Recruitment. Caig said, “There’s a big difference in how these workers are paid. They feel they’ve become a second-tier workforce.
“We would hope that this action will disrupt production within the first 48 hours. We’ll be picketing the factory and look forward to seeing what we can achieve.”
Update Wed 9 January: The strike has now been called off. We will supply further details as we receive them
