Outrage at the sacking of psychiatric nurse Karen Reissmann for speaking out against cuts and privatisation of mental health services continues to be a cause of acute embarrassment for health bosses in Manchester.
The Patient and Public Involvement forum (PPI) has backed a call by the mental health users’ group for an external investigation into services provided by the Manchester Mental Health and Social Care Trust.
The mental health users’ group last month passed a vote of no confidence in the directors of the trust and its chief executive Shelia Foley following the introduction of controversial changes to services and Karen’s sacking.
Health workers are also continuing their efforts to win Karen’s reinstatement and are planning a lobby of mental health minister Ivan Lewis on Friday 25 January.
Karen’s Unison union, which is taking her case to an employment tribunal later this year, are also considering a national lobby of parliament.
