Barry Hill, Respect member and candidate for the Preston Tulketh ward, reports a great start to their by-election campaign.
“We leafleted 98 percent of the ward on Sunday,” he told Socialist Worker.
“We only missed the other 2 percent because we ran out of leaflets. We are going to start canvassing the ward this week.
“It was a great boost to be joined by Respect supporters from Manchester and Bolton. I hope more people will come to join our campaign over the next few weeks.”
Preston Respect councillor Michael Lavalette added, “It is going to be a hard fought election.
“We had a good turn out at the weekend but so did Labour and the Liberal Democrats. We need to make sure our campaign doesn’t get squeezed by the main parties.”
Sufiya Rehman travelled from Manchester with other Respect supporters to help with the campaign.
Sufiya told Socialist Worker, “Respect members like Michael Lavalette and Barry Hill stick to their principles.
“It’s brilliant that whatever problems Respect has had, they are getting on with putting the work in to make a difference to people in Preston.
“I’m certainly planning to go back to help.
“Respect is really important – imagine how miserable it would be if their was no alternative to the left of Labour.”
The by-election takes place on Thursday 14 February. Respect is calling on supporters in the north west of England to come to Preston every weekend.
Supporters from around the country are encouraged to help out on Saturday 2 and Saturday 9 February.
Accommodation will be available for those who want to stay over and help on the Sundays.
