Glasgow refuse workers strike over single status

Issue No. 2084

Refuse workers in Glasgow took strike action last week over their single status deal. Nine mechanics on the backshift at the Polmadie refuse depot are in dispute over the council’s controversial review of staff’s pay and conditions.

Another 16 workers refused to cross the picket line. Then 40 cleansing vehicle drivers, who work from other council depots, refused to work.

Willie McGonigle, the Unite union’s branch secretary, said, “We asked for talks with management but they refused.

“There was an official picket line and the refuse drivers refused to cross it so that is not wildcat action. This was official action.”
