Brighton and Hove bus drivers reject deal

Issue No. 2085

Bus drivers in the Unite union at the Brighton and Hove Bus and Coach Company are moving towards industrial action after voting to reject a pay offer that would amount to only 1.1 percent for new drivers.

Many of the drivers say they are ready to strike if management does not come back with a better offer. Union representatives were due to meet management on Wednesday of this week.

Average pay for a driver with the company is just £358.58 for a five day week.

One driver told the local paper, “My standard of living is going to go down because everything is going up. Petrol has gone through the roof.

“Shopping, electricity and gas bills have gone up and I’m getting peanuts.” Some drivers at the company are in the GMB union, which is currently consulting members over the pay offer.
