Lecturers in the UCU union in higher education (HE) are to be balloted from Friday of this week on whether to accept a deal on national pay negotiations. This would implement single-table bargaining, allowing all unions within HE to bargain collectively with the employers, which the left is in favour of.
But it would restrict UCU members from taking industrial action. The employers have implied that if the deal is not accepted they will withdraw from national bargaining.
Left wing activists in UCU have issued a statement condemning the deal and calling for UCU members to reject it as it would weaken the union. The statement also calls for branches to pass a motion arguing for a special sector conference to be held following the ballot to plan a campaign to defend national bargaining.
