Lecturers to protest at changes to funding

Issue No. 2085

The London region of the UCU lecturers’ union has called a demonstration in protest at government changes to higher education funding, which were announced without consultation last September.

The changes would mean that £100 million of funding for students who are studying for a qualification that is equivalent to or lower than a qualification they already have would be withdrawn.

Universities and colleges offering courses to adults and part time students are set to be hit hardest, with the Open University likely to lose £31.6 million in teaching funding by 2014.

The date of the demonstration was due to be announced next week.

Lecturers at Keele University protested against threatened job cuts on Monday of this week. The restructuring of the School of Economic and Management Studies has left 38 out of 67 academic staff in the school facing redundancy.
