TNT to launch mail delivery operation

Issue No. 2085

Bosses at private mail firm TNT are planning to cherry-pick lucrative Royal Mail delivery contracts by competing with the company to deliver post in some business areas.

The government opened up the postal industry to competition in February 2006 and even forced Royal Mail to deliver its rivals’ post at a loss to itself.

Now TNT plans its own delivery service in some parts of Scotland, but only in areas where high profits are guaranteed – leaving Royal Mail to service parts of the country that TNT deems “underproductive”.

TNT’s delivery operation is tiny compared to that of Royal Mail, which must not be allowed to use TNT’s plans as an excuse to further attack the pay, pensions and conditions of workers.
