There were sighs of relief among Western leaders last week when Egypt finally sealed its border with the Gaza Strip. Yet there was also a recognition that the US strategy to isolate the Palestinian resistance has turned to dust.
The Egyptian government has been forced to do the unimaginable – invite the Hamas government for talks in Cairo. This move caused deep consternation for the pro-Israel Palestinian president Mahmoud Abbas.
It has now been accepted that without Hamas there can be no border. Hamas has driven a bulldozer through George Bush’s Middle East strategy and broken the siege of Gaza.
