Union launches campaign in further education

Issue No. 2089

Further education lecturers in the UCU union have launched a new campaign – Our Schools, Our Colleges, Our Communities, Our Unions.

The campaign is backed by the NUT teachers’ union.

It comes as a fightback begins over Gordon Brown’s public sector pay freeze, with further education lecturers and teachers balloting for strike action.

If the ballots are successful both groups of workers could strike together on 24 April.

The new campaign links issues of pay with wider attacks on education.

These developments threaten jobs and pay, but also the public and community function – providing education for people of all backgrounds, ages, abilities and communities.

The campaign can boost the fight for decent pay in education – and also challenge the government’s priorities that put the needs of business before students.

A launch rally takes place on Monday 3 March, 6pm, Emmanuel Centre, 9-23 Marsham Street, London SW1. For more information go to »
