Socialist Worker

Bloody Sunday DVD

Issue No. 2091

It is hard to believe that this excellent film about the murder of 14 unarmed civilians by British paratroopers in Northern Ireland 36 years ago could have been made by one of Hollywood’s top directors.

When it was first shown on TV six years ago, the film was the subject of an outpouring of hatred from right wing politicians and press – though none could fault it factually.

Many Socialist Worker readers will rightly take issue with the political prominence given to the central character MP Ivan Cooper, played by James Nesbitt, yet that does not prevent the film ruthlessly exposing the brutality of the British.
