FBU election challenge to New Labour in Liverpool

Issue No. 2091

Firefighters in Merseyside are preparing an electoral challenge to New Labour councillors who back cuts in public services, say officials in the Fire Brigades Union (FBU).

Mark Dunne, branch chair of Merseyside FBU, told Socialist Worker, “There are New Labour members of the fire authority who have consistently voted for cuts.

“We’ve spoken to them about it enough times. Now we think it’s time to stand against them at the May elections.”

The FBU is looking to put together a slate of “strong local candidates” under a general umbrella campaign of defending public services, Mark adds.

Details of the Merseyside FBU slate will be finalised over the next few weeks.
