Lecturers in further education in the UCU union will begin balloting this week over whether to take strike action against their below-inflation pay offer.
Lecturers were offered a pay rise of 2.55 percent for 2007-08.
Howard Miles, a member of the UCU executive said, “It’s important that we get a really good yes vote to send a signal to the employer that we are not prepared to take pay cuts.
“It is crucial to co-ordinate the campaign with the teachers and build joint events and rallies.
“We need to build up a head of steam.”
Lecturers have been organising recruitment events in preparation for the ballot. Campaign materials will be sent to every member from Friday.
