A single state is the only just solution for Palestine and Israel

Issue No. 2092

People across the world are rightly horrified at the appalling violence and cruelty that has been meted out by Israel’s armed forces against the Palestinian population of Gaza.

Israel’s 60-year long oppression of the Palestinians lies at the root of the conflict. Israel dispossessed the Palestinian people of their homeland in 1948 and ethnically cleansed the majority into neighbouring countries.

At first Israel tried to deny the existence of the Palestinians. Then, when Palestinian resistance made that impossible, it denied them all rights. The US soon came to back Israel as its “watchdog” in the Middle East.

Some see the solution in the construction of a separate Palestinian state. But Israel has wrecked any possibility of such a “two state solution”, seeing even a weak and divided Palestinian state as a threat to its existence.

The only solution that can bring long term peace and justice in the Middle East is a single democratic and secular state where Arabs and Jews have equal rights. All Palestinians must be allowed to return to their homeland.

The present “solutions” offered by the US and other Western powers will only lead to more bloodshed and horror for the Palestinians.
