Brian de Palma’s Redacted

This is a shocking film that pulls no punches in depicting the brutality of the Iraq war.

The film follows a unit of US troops manning a checkpoint in Samarra. When their sergeant is killed by a roadside bomb, two of the soldiers set out on a brutal revenge “mission” targeted at a young Iraqi girl.

Director Brian de Palma has put together an innovative and engrossing “fictional documentary” that tells the story through fragments of video diary, CCTV footage, blogs and invented news channels.

The film is harrowing and even nauseating in places. But it is a powerful reminder – five years after the invasion of Iraq – of the human cost of US and British aggression in the Middle East.
