Lecturers balloting to join action with teachers

by Howard Miles, UCU national executive
Issue No. 2096

College lecturers in the UCU union are working towards a big strike vote in our pay ballot – which closes on 14 April.

Members were boosted by the teachers' strike vote and we are busy organising joint meetings, rallies and demonstrations for 24 April.

We are confident that we can win this ballot. Lecturers know that pay is the focus for anger over issues which are damaging all sectors of education.

A message of support from the National Union of Students last week was very welcome. We need the biggest possible show of resistance to Gordon Brown's pay limit, and all the signs are that the strike will be a fantastic day of public sector unity.

Union members already report significant union recruitment. We need to argue that schools and colleges should close during the strike and other workers should not cross our picket lines.

This will be just the start of a pay campaign that can overturn the government's attempt to make us pay for their crisis.
