Over 100 delegates packed into a meeting to hear leading Unison activist Yunus Bakhsh outline the way he is being victimised by his employers for his trade union activities – and how his fight is being undermined by his own union.
Yunus is a leading figure on the left of the Unison union and is well known for providing effective representation for his members. This led him into conflict with the bosses, and with the leadership of his own union.
While fighting for his reinstatement, Unison’s leaders suspended Yunus from his elected positions as a branch secretary and member of the union’s health executive.
Yunus told the meeting, “This fight is not really about me, it is about you.
“Employers want rid of union reps that can really stand up for their members, while Unison’s leadership are driven to panic about the growth of the left in the union. That is why my fight is a fight for all of you.”
The meeting also heard from Glenn Kelly, secretary of Greenwich local government Unison. He explained that the national union has launched an investigatory hearing into himself and three other branch secretaries who are all members of the Socialist Party for issuing a leaflet into last year’s national Unison conference.
Yunus will this week take his case that he is being attacked by Unison’s leaders for political reasons to a hearing of the trade union certification officer.
