Issue No. 1767

PORTSMOUTH Socialist Alliance passed this motion at its public meeting last week.

'WE EXPRESS our deepest sympathy at the tragic and terrible loss of life in the United States last week. Socialists oppose and have always opposed terrorism. Terrorism targets the wrong people, claims innocent lives and cannot achieve social change.

Real social change can be brought about only through mass action by working people themselves. However, it must also be recognised that the root cause of Tuesday's events lies in the imperialist policies of the US government and giant corporations. Together they strive to exploit and police the whole planet, and it is this which drives people to the kind of desperation which creates the suicide bomber.

We declare ourselves opposed to any violent retaliation, restriction of democratic rights, civil liberties or the exploitation of these events by politicians and the media to suppress democratic debate on issues such as privatisation, or to stir up hatred against asylum seekers, Muslims or other vulnerable groups.'
