Bolton teachers due to strike against academy

Issue No. 2099

Teachers in the National Union of Teachers (NUT) at Withins School in Bolton are due to strike on Thursday of next week after 94 percent voted for action in a recent ballot.

After being put into special measures in 2003 the school has become one of the most improved secondary schools in the country. Despite this, Bolton council plans to turn the school into an academy.

Teachers are angry because the plans would mean that their employer would change, without their consent, to a private academy sponsor.

NUT divisional secretary Barry Conway told Socialist Worker, 'This is a trade dispute over the change of employer.

'If someone chooses to work for a particular employer and that employer chooses to make a contract with that employee, then what law says that the employee can be transferred to another employer without their consent?'
