Gordon Brown must act on environment evidence

Issue No. 2101

Global levels of carbon dioxide have reached an all-time high and the earth may be losing its capacity to reabsorb carbon emissions, according to new research out this week.

Government targets on carbon emissions are already inadequate. Gordon Brown has stuck to a target of 60 percent cuts in emissions by 2050, despite the fact that experts suggest cuts of at least 80 percent by 2030 are needed.

The government has an official commitment to generating 20 percent of Britain’s energy from renewable sources by 2020, but leaked government documents show they are trying to reduce even this.

The mainstream media and Western politicians like to blame China for many of the world’s problems, and climate change is no exception.

This is an attempt to exempt the West, which historically is to blame for causing climate change, from any responsibility to take action.

We should reject it – and demand that Brown acts on the evidence before it is too late.
