Egyptian strike leaders are released

Issue No. 2105

Three Egyptian strike leaders have been released from detention and given back their jobs in a key victory for textile workers in Mahalla el-Kubra.

Kamal el-Fayoumi, Tarek Amin and Kareem el-Beheiri were arrested following mass protests that erupted into anti-regime riots in the Nile delta town in April.

The textile workers have led a series of strikes that have shaken the regime of Hosni Mubarak, a key US ally.

One detainee said that many of the Mahalla prisoners were subjected to torture by Mubarak’s security police. News of the victory was tempered by news that nine other workers received further detention orders.
