Last week Community Union members at Wybone factory, Barnsley stepped up their action in their fight to get a decent wage increase. They were out on strike all week. One picket said, “We really affected production this week. They’ve had managers working but they’re not very good at it.”
Barnsley Trades Council organised a support rally outside the factory on Friday lunchtime. Over 40 were present. Brian Steele, Barnsley Trades Council secretary, said, “We need action like this to support these lads and make sure they win.”
Members of the PCS, Unison, NUT and UCU unions joined the rally. Fran Postlethwaite, NUT rep at the local school, said, “Seven of us were really keen to come down and show solidarity. It has given all of us a boost as well as supporting the strikers.”
The workforce returned to work on Monday and management are now offering further talks. If nothing comes of these talks then the union will be discussing what further action to take.
Mark, one of the workers, said, “We’re really made up with the support we have received. We’ve had several donations from workplaces and messages of support. It makes us realise that we are not on our own.”
