BOMBING THE weak and starving. That's George Bush and Tony Blair's plan for Afghanistan. And in a sickening hoax they claim to be helping the ordinary people there. On Monday the US and British governments made sure pictures were beamed around the world of bags of wheat emblazoned with 'USA' going to Afghanistan. But that cynical display is much too little and much too late.
Just the threat of bombing cut off all aid to people in Afghanistan for three weeks. The West had already ignored pleas for food. The convoys sent this Monday carry a total of 400 tonnes of food. But the six million people who face starvation in Afghanistan need 580,000 tonnes now to avert mass starvation.
Bombing will halt all aid. And it kills civilians. Remember the Gulf War ten years ago. We were told the West was going to 'take out' Saddam Hussein. He is still there. Over 100,000 ordinary Iraqis are not-killed by bombs and Cruise missiles.
The US and British governments are again spending billions on war. And at home they offer us another recession. That means not only hundreds of thousands of job losses on both sides of the Atlantic. It means the deaths of 40,000 more children in the Third World, according to conservative estimates by the World Bank. Growing numbers of people are saying no to Bush and Blair. We must join together to stop this war.
