Sadr movement plans new offensive

Issue No. 2106

Rebel Iraqi cleric Moqtada al-Sadr has announced that his movement will no longer take part in any government that supports the US occupation.

Sadr, who leads the Mehdi Army and enjoys widespread support among poor Shia Muslims in Iraq, is threatening to launch a new offensive by “special companies” on the US and its allies.

He ordered his supporters to observe a ceasefire following attempts to crush his movement, but revelations about the “special accords” the US is imposing on Iraq have created widespread anger.

A spokesman for the movement said, “We don’t want anybody to blame us or consider us part of this government while it is allowing the country to be under occupation.”
