Around 300 delegates packed into a meeting to defend Unison union activists from attacks by their own union

Some 300 people crammed into a Unison union conference fringe meeting in defence of well known activists who are being victimised by their own union.

Tony Staunton, Yunus Bakhsh and Glenn Kelly all spoke.

Tony, having being expelled from Unison is now, shamefully, being pursued through the courts by his former union for thousands of pounds.

Yunus is facing the sack from his job as a nurse and a disciplinary by Unison.

An Employment Tribunal against his employer is scheduled to begin on 11 August

Glenn Kelly is being investigated by the union for a leaflet produced at the previous year’s conference.

Many delegates spoke of their anger at these attacks, with some saying that loyalty to Labour and hostility to the left is the common motivation behind the witch-hunt.

Jon Rogers, a member of Unison’s national executive, said any future left-led executive would reinstate Tony’s Unison membership and back Yunus fully.
